| After twelve years of hunting on the Uwharrie Game Lands, it
finally paid off. In 1990 and 1991, Ted and I spent every Tuesday and every Saturday
hunting on these game lands. We had several spots that we liked, but our favorite
was "the mountain," the place where we had seen the most deer over the years. In 1998, we decided to give the mountain another try. Ted had his old climbing stand with him, but mine was locked away in our shed, and I was unable to get it out in time to take it with us, so it was decided that I would just hunt on the ground. Since I didn't have my treestand with me, Ted decided not to use his either. We walked several hundred yards into the woods, and Ted found a nice place to set up for his hunt. I moved farther up into the woods, and sat down in on the ground leaning up against a tree. Off in the distance we could hear the turkeys yelping, and the sound of the occasional car passing on the dirt road below us. As the morning wore on, I jumped as I heard two shots from Ted's rifle. I got to my feet and turned around to look down towards where he was hunting. As I watched, a doe came running up the trail right toward me, so I raised my rifle and quickly fired, dropping the deer with a single shot. I holler down to Ted, asking him what had happened. He had missed both shots cleanly. Although I had killed plenty of deer in my life, and Ted had only one to his credit at the time, I was a little bit glad that I had been the one to get this, our first Uwharrie deer. I felt that I deserved it, having hunted here for so many years, even before Ted had first joined me. It was only a small doe, but it was the first time that we had ever reaped the fruits of our work in Uwharrie. |
