| By the opening day of the 1999 SC rifle deer season, Arnold
had already taken several deer with his bow, and I had yet to even get a shot off.
I was feeling a little frustrated, so Arnold told me to go on out to the power lines and
take a doe. Even though opening day is not a doe day, I had purchased three doe tags
which allowed me to take one at any time during the season. I hunted in the new tower that Arnold had built out on the power lines, and, about an hour before dark, I saw a huge doe appear about 120 yards away from me. My shot was good, and the deer dropped dead in its tracks. I drove back around to Arnold's house, got on the four wheeler, and drove around to the other side of the power lines. The deer was so large that it was a struggle to get it loaded on the four wheeler by myself, but I finally made it. I drove back up to the top of the hill and waited for Arnold to come out from where he was hunting at another spot on the power lines. He was impressed with the size of the deer. She reminded us both of the large doe that I had taken in the middle field some years before. |
