| In late 1999, Ted and I had the opportunity to do a little
bit of hunting on Micki's father Gerald's 100 acres of land down near Sharon, South
Carolina. On this particular morning, I was hunting from a white oak tree overlooking a
huge cutover that led down to Gerald's 12 acre lake. As I watched, several deer
emerged from the woods and began making their way down to the pond for their morning
drink. I sighted my rifle in on the largest of the deer and fired. A miss. That deer vanished, so I swung the rifle around to another deer and fired again. I saw this one drop, and the rest of the deer left the area in a hurry. Ted was hunting from a stand about 150 yards away, though we were visible to each other. I waved him over, and we started down to look for my deer. We looked very carefully all around for any sign of blood where the first deer had been, but, finding none, we finally decided that I had in fact missed. The second deer was laying dead right where I had shot her, so we took her on to the processor, and I had my second deer of the year, and the thirteenth of my life. |
