Thermacell Mosquito Repellent

Last year a new product started showing up on the shelves of my local hunting stores.  This item, they said, was the best mosquito repellent anyone had ever seen.  At first I ignored what folks were saying, thinking that I had tried many different sprays and scents in the past, and they either smelled so bad that they scared off all the deer or they just weren't effective.

Then one morning after three hours in a tree stand with mosquitoes buzzing incessantly in my ears, I decided to give the Thermacell product a try.  I bought a repellent mechanism and a refill pack and took it back into the woods with me that afternoon.  That was over a year ago, and in all that time I have not been bothered by a single mosquito while using the product in the woods.  Folks, it's that good.  It's safe, easy to use, and it actually works.  I told all my hunting buddies about it, and every one of them went out and bought one.

This has got to be the product of the decade for hunters.  Thermacell did not pay me to say this, nor did they ask me to write this review.  What I'm telling you is the absolute truth.  If you're bothered by mosquitoes while you're hunting, get one of these.  I have had deer walk within 10 feet of my stand while I was using my Thermacell, and I saw no reaction from any of them.  I've asked other hunters about their experiences with deer while using the product, and not a single one of them has told me that it scared the deer.

The product advertises itself as odor free, but this is not 100% accurate.  I can always smell, if only slightly, the odor of the unit when it is in use.  Again though, this scent does not bother the deer.  Also, be aware that the Thermacell uses a butane cartridge to heat a chemical pad which releases the actual repellent into the air.  This causes the unit to get a bit warm after several hours of use, so you might want to turn it off 15 minutes before you leave your stand so that it will have time to cool down before you put it in your backpack.

Wingshooters highly recommends this product.  If you buy one, go ahead and buy a couple of refill packs while you're at it.  These things go off the shelves so fast that there might not be any left next time you're in the store.
